BSI turns nonorganic waste into gold savings from Rp55 ribu

BSI plans five kiosks through August 2026 and aims to handle more than 27 tons of recycled waste.

PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk launched the Green Zakat program, which lets people exchange nonorganic waste for BSI Emas savings balances. Waste is deposited at recycling kiosks, then its value is converted into a gold account once it reaches a minimum of Rp55 ribu. The Waste Management program also uses zakat funds to empower mustahik in the waste-handling sector. Collected materials are sorted and processed into products such as bags, plaques, chairs and recycled tables that can be sold. In the initial phase, the program targets more than 20 households, or 73 beneficiaries, in Bantar Gebang and Tangerang Selatan. BSI aims to manage more than 27 tons of waste and gradually operate five kiosks through August 2026 in Bekasi, Tangerang, Serpong, Pamulang and Ciputat, with support of Rp1 billion.
