BRIN tests cassava flour for wildfire suppression, not ready yet
BRIN says the method appears sound in theory, but effectiveness, mixing ratios and dispersal tools remain under test.
BRIN is still testing the use of cassava flour to help extinguish forest and land fires, so the technology is not yet ready for production or broad deployment. BRIN head Arif Satria said an initial review by molecular chemistry experts found the method theoretically possible after information emerged about its use in practice. BRIN and Polri are now testing its effectiveness in the field, including the material composition and how to disperse it in large-scale fires. Arif said the main challenge lies in applying it over large areas because the material cannot be spread manually and requires special equipment. At the same time, BRIN is also coordinating with BMKG and Polri on karhutla response, including through weather modification technology.
