Bolsonaro drops Brazil election annulment bid as party concedes loss

What's new: He now aims to disqualify Lula's ticket instead, while a court order bars him from leaving Brazil.

Flavio Bolsonaro backed away from his threat to seek annulment of Brazil's presidential election after his Liberal Party formally recognized Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's victory. Party president Valdemar Costa Neto said the party accepted the result, even as it criticized pre-election public spending and raised unanswered questions about the vote. Bolsonaro, who lost by about 4.4 million votes, shifted to a new legal strategy, arguing Lula's ticket should be disqualified over alleged abuse of political and economic power. He offered no evidence. Bolsonaro also said federal police ordered him to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports and barred him from leaving Brazil under a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
