BNPB maps 44 fire-hit areas in Sumsel, arson suspicion grows

Many hot spots appeared along conversion-permit boundaries, prompting BNPB to push for probes into companies and individuals.

BNPB has mapped 44 forest and plantation conversion areas that burned in Sumatera Selatan, with strong indications of deliberate burning to clear or expand land. The finding came from BNPB's spatial data mapping aligned with ATR/BPN data. The burned areas include oil palm plantations, industrial timber estates, KPH, and protected forests. BNPB head Kristomei Sianturi asked law enforcement to fully investigate the perpetrators, both individuals and corporations, so firefighting efforts do not end in vain. He also highlighted the need to review operations that have involved thousands of personnel and helicopters, and urged collaborative command posts for each hot-spot cluster. BNPB also asked BRGM to prepare permanent solutions for peat ecosystems in provinces prioritized for karhutla.
