Binance traced $6.3 billion hack to fake interviews and AI breach

What's new: Customers pulled as much as $4.36 billion after withdrawals resumed, testing confidence in the biggest crypto exchange.

Binance said hackers behind the record $6.3 billion theft broke in through a monthslong campaign that used fake job interviews, malware and a compromised internal AI tool. The exchange said attackers first targeted engineers in June and September, then moved through internal systems before draining wallet infrastructure in about 20 minutes on Oct. 29. The FBI has linked the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor unit. Binance restored withdrawals in phases on Nov. 1 and said it had replenished 95% to 98% of the stolen assets with company funds, though some less liquid tokens were still being sourced. Net outflows reached $3.64 billion by Binance's count, while DefiLlama showed $4.36 billion.
