BGN tests buffet-style MBG at 62 SPPG, eyes 5,000 kitchens

If the two-week test avoids major problems, BGN plans to expand the format to 1,000-5,000 SPPG by the end of 2026.

Badan Gizi Nasional has begun testing distribution of the Free Nutritious Meals Program using a buffet system at 62 Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi in various regions. BGN head Sudaryono said the trial has been running for the past two weeks to measure its effectiveness and its positive and negative effects. If the results are good and no significant problems emerge, BGN is preparing to expand it to 1,000 to 5,000 SPPG, or MBG kitchens, by the end of 2026. According to Sudaryono, the buffet model keeps food warmer when eaten and tends to be finished because students who want more can go back for another serving. The setup is also seen as training students to queue, be patient, take responsibility and help one another. Its implementation, however, depends on the readiness of kitchens, schools and student participation.
