Beshear presses McConnell to prove fitness to serve or resign

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear urged Sen. Mitch McConnell on Monday to publicly show he can still perform his duties or step down, after McConnell's office said the 84-year-old Republican remains in rehabilitation and is not yet cleared to leave. Beshear said a short video or a call to a Kentucky radio or TV station would help prove McConnell can speak and carry out the job. He also asked Senate Majority Leader John Thune to investigate McConnell's condition and consider expulsion if warranted. McConnell has been hospitalized since a June 14 fall that briefly left him unconscious and was later complicated by mild pneumonia. His absence has sharpened questions over Kentucky's untested 2024 law requiring a special election rather than a temporary gubernatorial appointment.
