Hindu-Muslim clashes in Nepal kill 3 people
Curfews were imposed in the south, hundreds of security personnel and troops were deployed, and dozens of people were injured.
Clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups in Nepal killed at least three people and triggered curfews in several districts in the country's south. The violence began Sunday night in Sunsari District after a dispute during celebrations by the two religious communities escalated into retaliatory attacks. Crowds then burned a government office, shopping centers and a police post, and damaged other public facilities. The government deployed hundreds of security personnel, including the Nepal military, to contain the unrest. Police also fired shots as they dispersed the crowd. A farmer, Om Prakash Mehata, was killed at the scene, while Jaya Prakash Mehata died while being treated on Thursday. The third victim was reported from Siraha District. President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged residents to exercise restraint, while the government promised an investigation into the incident.
