Belgium routs U.S. 4-1, knocking co-hosts out of World Cup

What's new: The loss in Seattle followed a furor over FIFA clearing Folarin Balogun to play after his red card was overturned.

Belgium eliminated the United States from the World Cup with a 4-1 round-of-16 win in Seattle on Monday, ending the co-hosts' tournament run. Charles De Ketelaere scored in the ninth minute, Malik Tillman leveled for the U.S. after half an hour, and De Ketelaere struck again two minutes later to put Belgium back ahead. Hans Vanaken added a third before Romelu Lukaku sealed the result in stoppage time. The match drew added scrutiny before kickoff after FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun's one-match ban, allowing the U.S. forward to play. Balogun had been sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Belgium's challenge to the reversal was dismissed as inadmissible.
