Bahlil: Coal crisis at PLTU resolved, Java power gradually recovers

The government is holding back some exports to keep domestic supply adequate while it monitors PLN’s coal procurement.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the shortage of medium-calorie coal for PLTU has been resolved after it briefly caused power service disruptions in several regions, including on Pulau Jawa. He said supply of coal with specifications of around 5,200 kcal per kg GAR is now flowing. Earlier, Bahlil said the problem was not only volume but also the quality of coal needed for power plant blending. PLN’s annual need is around 154 million metric tons, and 141 million tons had been received by midyear. The government is now holding back some exports to meet domestic needs first, and has formed a special team to oversee PLN’s coal procurement so similar disruptions do not recur as in 2022.
