Avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak kills climber Nirmal Purja and 9 others

What's new: Rescuers recovered Purja's body on Sunday after earlier finding three other climbers dead on the 8,047-meter peak.

Rescuers in Pakistan recovered the body of British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja after an avalanche on Broad Peak killed the 43-year-old expedition leader and nine other climbers, according to his company and local rescuers. The slide struck Thursday on the 8,047-meter mountain in the Karakoram range near the China border. Pakistani officials had earlier identified three recovered victims as American Mallory Geis, Oman's Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy and Nepal's Pur Bahadur Gurung. The Alpine Club of Pakistan said Purja was found about 5,700 meters up the mountain, with three more bodies sighted. Bad weather and the threat of more avalanches complicated the search.
