Aung San Suu Kyi meets Red Cross envoy in rare Myanmar appearance

Why it matters: The images are the first public glimpse of Suu Kyi in months as pressure grows for access to the detained former leader.

Myanmar authorities released photos Monday showing detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi meeting Arnaud de Baecque, the International Committee of the Red Cross representative in Myanmar, in Naypyitaw. It was a rare outside contact for the 81-year-old Nobel laureate, whose whereabouts and condition have been difficult to verify since the military ousted her elected government in February 2021. The government gave no details on what was discussed, and Reuters and ABC could not independently verify the date or location of the images. Separate photos also showed Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake. She was moved from prison to house arrest in April after a military-run election and a sentence reduction tied to a prisoner amnesty.
