Audi plans $4 billion Georgia SUV plant with 4,500 jobs

Why it matters: The move would give Audi its first US assembly plant after tariffs hit the brand’s import-heavy business.

Audi plans to build a $4 billion vehicle assembly plant in Macon, Georgia, that would produce 200,000 SUVs a year and create about 4,500 jobs. The project, presented at a rally in Perry by President Donald Trump alongside Audi CEO Gernot Doellner, would be the brand’s first US assembly plant. Audi currently imports all vehicles sold in the US from Europe or Mexico, and the company said tariffs last year cost it 1.2 billion euros, or about $1.4 billion. Construction is scheduled to begin next year. A final investment decision still must go before Volkswagen’s supervisory board, as German labor leaders and Lower Saxony officials press for assurances that expanded US production will not come at the expense of jobs in Germany.
