Army picks 5 bases for $2.2 billion nuclear microreactor push

The U.S. Army plans to deploy nuclear microreactors at five domestic bases under a program worth up to $2.2 billion over five years, part of a broader push to expand U.S. nuclear power and harden military sites against grid failures. The Janus program selected Antares Nuclear for Fort Bragg, Radiant Industries for Fort Benning, Westinghouse Electric for Fort Drum, BWX Technologies for Fort Campbell and General Atomics for Fort Hood. Army officials said the companies would build, own and operate the units if they meet performance milestones. The service expects more than 20 microreactors overall and wants at least one operating by the end of September 2028. Officials also acknowledged the effort carries execution risk because several designs remain unbuilt.
