Apple sues OpenAI, ex-executives over trade secrets and hardware plans

What's new: Apple asked a California jury to force redesigns of upcoming OpenAI devices and destroy proprietary materials.

Apple sued OpenAI in federal court in Northern California, accusing the ChatGPT maker and its hardware chief, Tang Tan, of orchestrating a campaign to obtain confidential details about unreleased Apple products for OpenAI’s device push. The complaint also names former Apple engineer Chang Liu. Apple alleges candidates were pressed to bring parts and internal information to interviews, and that Liu downloaded confidential hardware files before joining OpenAI in January. The case marks a sharp rupture between companies that had partnered on Apple Intelligence and Siri. OpenAI denied seeking rivals’ trade secrets. Apple is seeking a jury trial, damages, destruction of proprietary materials and changes to future products.
