Apple sues OpenAI, 2 ex-staff over alleged trade secret theft

What's new: Apple claims OpenAI interviewers asked recruits to bring Apple parts as "show and tell" for its hardware push.

Apple filed a federal lawsuit Friday accusing OpenAI, design startup io Products and two former Apple employees of improperly using confidential information to support OpenAI's entry into consumer hardware. The suit names former Apple engineer Chang Liu and former iPhone and Apple Watch design executive Tang Yew Tan, now OpenAI's chief hardware officer. Apple alleges the men took internal material after leaving and says OpenAI also pressed current Apple employees for sensitive details during hiring talks, including requests to bring actual parts to interviews. OpenAI denied seeking rivals' trade secrets and said it was reviewing the complaint. The case marks a sharp break between the companies after Apple had integrated ChatGPT into its devices.
