Apple shifts some US chip design and production to Intel

Why it matters: The deal could give Intel a major foundry customer as Washington pushes to expand domestic semiconductor capacity.

Apple will work with Intel to design and manufacture some of its chips in the United States, according to a June 18 post by President Donald Trump. The move would help Apple add chip capacity and reduce its heavy reliance on TSMC, whose advanced production lines are under pressure from demand tied to Nvidia and AMD. The Wall Street Journal had reported in May that Intel reached a preliminary agreement with Apple after more than a year of talks. For Intel, landing Apple would strengthen a manufacturing business that has trailed TSMC. Earlier this week, Intel said its 18A process entered initial production. The Trump administration took a 10% stake in Intel in 2025 and pledged about $10 billion for US factory projects.
