Apple plans price hikes as AI chip crunch lifts memory costs

What's new: Tim Cook said Apple may use its cash reserves to help expand memory supply, but gave no timing or size for any increases.

Apple plans to raise prices on some products as surging memory and storage chip costs squeeze margins, Chief Executive Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal. Cook said AI-driven demand from data centers has tightened supplies of DRAM and other memory components used in consumer devices, pushing vendors to pass on steep increases. He did not say when price hikes would take effect, how large they would be, or which devices would be affected. Cook also said Apple is willing to use its balance sheet to help increase industry capacity, though he ruled out building Apple-owned memory or storage plants. He added that all supply options should be considered as US restrictions limit work with some Chinese chipmakers.
