Alaska governor orders probe into alleged Senate ballot scheme

What's new: The inquiry targets whether efforts tied to Mary Peltola's orbit broke state law days before voters decide control of Congress.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy directed the state Department of Public Safety to investigate whether an alleged effort to influence the state's Senate ballot violated the law. The move followed a New York Times report that people linked to Democratic candidate Mary Peltola and senior aides at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee tried to recruit a second Dan Sullivan to run against incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. Peltola's team denied wrongdoing and said it did not encourage the retired teacher to enter the race. The second Sullivan has also denied campaign ties. Alaska's ballot will list Dan S. Sullivan, the incumbent Republican senator, and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. in one of the tightest midterm contests.
