Alan Wilson wins South Carolina GOP governor runoff

What's next: Wilson will face Democrat Jermaine Johnson in November to succeed term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson won the Republican runoff for governor on Tuesday, defeating Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette after President Donald Trump muddied the race by backing Evette and later saying he supported both candidates. Wilson, 52, has served as the state's top prosecutor since 2011 and drew support from sheriffs, solicitors and several former rivals. His win sends him to a November general election against Democratic nominee Jermaine Johnson. The contest to replace term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster became a test of candidates' ties to Trump, whose preferred picks for governor had recently lost in Iowa and Georgia.
