Alabama reruns 4 House primaries after redistricting scramble
Why it matters: The new map weakens one majority-Black district and could help Republicans protect their narrow House edge in November.
Voters in four of Alabama’s seven congressional districts returned to the polls Tuesday for a second round of primaries after a court-driven redistricting fight upended the state’s original map. Republican Gov. Kay Ivey postponed the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th district primaries that had been set for May, forcing some voters to cast ballots again under new boundaries that take effect in January 2027. The new Republican-backed map cuts the Black share of the 2nd District to about 40% from roughly half, making Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures’ seat more favorable to the GOP. Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell remains in a 7th District with a slight Black majority. Polls close at 7 p.m. CT.
