AISMOLI pushes electric vehicle adoption after 37% fuel rise

A sharp rise in costs since June 10 has opened a window to speed EV adoption, with 98 percent of respondents backing the shift.

The Asosiasi Industri Sepeda Motor Listrik Indonesia (AISMOLI) said a roughly 37 percent increase in nonsubsidized fuel prices since June 10, 2026 is a turning point for accelerating electric vehicle adoption in Indonesia. AISMOLI Chairman Budi Setiyadi said transport cost pressures, along with the rupiah's weakening against the U.S. dollar, make electric vehicles increasingly relevant for lowering household spending and reducing reliance on imported fuel. AISMOLI cited a Litbang Kompas survey in April 2026 in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Makassar that found 98 percent of respondents supported the use of electric vehicles, while 94.8 percent called on the government to speed the transition with supporting policies. Among respondents who do not yet own an electric vehicle, 81.1 percent said they would be willing to switch if the economic, health and environmental benefits were greater.
