AI chip debt draws scrutiny over $70 billion in hidden backstops

Why it matters: If AI demand cools, Nvidia, Broadcom and others could face billions in support payments that do not sit on balance sheets today.

Bond investors are increasingly focused on roughly $70 billion of off-balance-sheet support tied to AI infrastructure financing, raising concerns that a downturn could turn those commitments into real liabilities. The structures let special-purpose vehicles borrow to buy chips or data center assets, with contracts from users supporting the debt and a residual-value backstop covering any shortfall after assets are re-leased or sold. Nvidia’s Aug. 11 financing partnership could add tens of billions more in such support, while Broadcom has used a similar setup tied to Anthropic and Meta Platforms disclosed comparable guarantees for data centers. Investors worry the obligations could hit just as earnings weaken if AI spending slows.
