Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, sets up Rogers race

Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won Michigan’s Democratic primary for the open U.S. Senate seat, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens after vote counting stretched overnight. The former Detroit and Wayne County public health official will face former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. The race is one of a handful likely to shape control of the chamber in the midterms. El-Sayed’s victory marked a win for the party’s left flank after a bitter contest over electability, money and U.S. support for Israel. Stevens, backed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Peters, had support from party moderates, while El-Sayed drew endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
