Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary in upset over Stevens

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a closely fought contest that exposed a sharp split inside the party. With more than 95% of votes counted, Associated Press tallies cited by CNN Indonesia showed El-Sayed at about 48.5% to Stevens’ 47.5%, a margin of 14,893 votes. El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health official backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, ran on Medicare for All, lower drug costs, campaign finance reform and ending military aid to Israel. Stevens had support from Democratic leaders and heavy outside spending, including more than $30 million tied to AIPAC. El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in November.
