Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary by fewer than 15,000 votes

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary after beating Rep. Haley Stevens by 14,893 votes, less than 1% of more than 1.5 million ballots counted. The 41-year-old former Wayne County public health official, backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, overcame Stevens despite support for her from Democratic leaders and heavy outside spending. El-Sayed, an epidemiologist born in Detroit to an Egyptian father and an American mother, will face former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in November. The result sets up a closely watched test of whether a left-wing Democrat can win statewide in Michigan, a swing state that Donald Trump carried in the 2024 presidential election.
