Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic Senate primary by under 1 point

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, is projected to win Michigan’s Democratic primary for US Senate after edging Rep. Haley Stevens by fewer than 15,000 votes, or just under 1 percentage point, out of more than 1.5 million ballots counted. The closely watched contest exposed divisions inside the party over ideology and strategy ahead of the midterm elections. El-Sayed, backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, campaigned on Medicare for All and reducing the role of money in politics. Stevens, endorsed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and outgoing Sen. Gary Peters, pitched a more centrist message focused on manufacturing jobs. El-Sayed now moves on to face Republican Mike Rogers in November.
