Abdul El-Sayed edges Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate primary

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens and advancing to a high-stakes November matchup with Republican Mike Rogers. CNN Indonesia reported El-Sayed led by 14,893 votes, less than 1 percentage point, out of more than 1.5 million ballots counted. The 41-year-old former Wayne County public health official ran with backing from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, overcoming support for Stevens from Democratic leaders and heavy outside spending. The seat is open because Sen. Gary Peters is leaving. Michigan is a battleground state, and the contest is seen as a key race for Democrats’ hopes of retaking the chamber.
