9 orangutans rescued from wildfire released in Ketapang

The animals, saved from August-September 2026 fires, had been treated for burns, thinness and malnutrition.

Nine orangutans rescued from forest and land fires were released into the Batu Nyambu Protected Forest in Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, on Thursday (29/10/2026). Among them were a mother named Mama Angelo and her offspring, Angelo, who returned to their natural habitat after undergoing rehabilitation at the Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia Foundation center. The orangutans were saved from severe fires in the Ketapang area in August and September 2026. When found, some had burns on their hands and feet and were in thin, malnourished condition. Before release, the team carried out veterinary checks, observation and treatment. Batu Nyambu was chosen because it has forest cover, food and water sources, and trees for nesting.
