Why it matters: Police said 10 officers were hurt as crowds in Midtown Manhattan damaged buses, patrol cars and private vehicles.
A 17-year-old was shot, five school buses were burned or wrecked and 63 people were arrested after New York Knicks fans flooded Midtown Manhattan following the team’s NBA title win. Police said gunfire broke out near 42nd Street and Broadway around 2 a.m. Sunday, leaving the teenager wounded in the foot. The NYPD also reported four slashings or stabbings, damage to police cars and private vehicles, fireworks set off in dense crowds, and fights as officers tried to clear the area. Ten officers were injured overnight. The buses had been transporting World Cup fans back to Times Square after a Brazil-Morocco match. The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 for their first championship in more than 50 years.
