42 U.S. state attorneys general probe OpenAI with subpoena

The request covers consumer and minors’ data, elderly users and concerns that chatbots could encourage criminal acts.

A coalition of 42 U.S. state attorneys general sent a subpoena to OpenAI on Friday seeking documents on the company's business practices and the impact of its products on users. According to a Wall Street Journal report cited by Antara, the request covers advertising, user engagement and retention, handling of consumer and health data, activity involving minors and elderly users, deep learning models, sycophantic model behavior and company policies. OpenAI said it would take the attorneys general's concerns seriously and engage constructively. The report also said the same coalition sent letters to Meta, Anthropic, Alphabet's Google and xAI, while demanding safety assurances so chatbots do not harm vulnerable users.
