4 Salvadoran air force members missing after Haiti gang ambush
What's new: Rescue attempts by land and air in Port-au-Prince's Santo area were slowed by heavy fighting, and support helicopters also came under fire.
Four Salvadoran air force members deployed to Haiti with an international security mission went missing after armed gangs ambushed their team in Port-au-Prince, El Salvador's armed forces said late Sunday. The troops were returning to camp in an armored vehicle when explosives hit it and set it on fire, the military said. The personnel escaped the vehicle, but contact was then lost. The Gang Suppression Force said one of its vehicles came under attack in the Santo area of the capital. El Salvador said repeated efforts to reach the area by road and by helicopter were hindered by the intensity of the fighting, and Salvadoran aircraft sent to help also drew gunfire.
