30 deaths at Congo displacement camp raise fears of fast Ebola spread
What's new: Health workers took samples from five victims after camp residents had resisted testing bodies and the living.
At least 30 people have died since early May at Kigonze camp in Bunia, in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in a surge that residents and aid workers fear could signal rapid Ebola transmission. Camp officials said the site, home to more than 15,000 displaced people, usually records one to three deaths a month, but 10 burials took place this week alone. Victims had symptoms including fever, headaches and vomiting, though the cause of death has not been confirmed. Caritas said families had refused testing of both the living and the dead until Thursday. Health teams have now collected samples from five victims as authorities await results.
