3 workers die in Cipayung drain, gas poisoning suspected
Two coworkers collapsed while trying to help, and 12 firefighters took nearly two hours to complete the evacuation.
Three project workers died inside a drain on Jalan Pintu 3 Keong Mas, Bambu Apus, Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Thursday. East Jakarta fire and rescue officials suspect the victims were exposed to hazardous gas or lacked oxygen while working in the channel.
Abdul Wahid, head of operations at Gulkarmat Jakarta Timur, said the incident began when one worker climbed down into the drain and fainted after reaching about halfway down the ladder. Two other workers then went in to help, but they also lost consciousness and died.
The report came in at 09.49 WIB. Pos Gulkarmat TMII deployed two rescue units and 12 personnel, arriving at about 09.55 WIB, starting the evacuation at 10.00, and finishing it at 11.55 WIB. The exact cause of death remains under investigation.
