3 volcanoes erupt in succession Tuesday night, Semeru on alert

Three active volcanoes in Indonesia erupted in succession on Tuesday night: Gunung Ibu in West Halmahera, Gunung Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, and Mount Semeru in East Java. Data from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources showed Gunung Ibu erupted three times at 20.36, 20.58 and 23.11 WIT, sending ash columns 700 meters, 500 meters and 600 meters above the summit. Its status was Level II, or Waspada. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted at 21.09 Wita, with an ash column 300 meters toward the west and northwest, a maximum amplitude of 11 millimeters, a duration of 109 seconds, and Level III, or Siaga, status. Semeru erupted at 20.33 WIB; the eruption was obscured by fog, but the seismograph recorded an amplitude of 22 millimeters for 235 seconds. For Semeru, residents are banned from activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan up to 13 kilometers from the summit, as well as within a 5 kilometer radius of the crater.
