25 states sue to block Trump’s new tariffs on 60 trading partners

A coalition of 25 Democratic-led states sued the Trump administration Monday, seeking to block new tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners and arguing President Donald Trump exceeded his legal authority. The case, filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, challenges tariffs of 10% and 12.5% imposed July 24, including on the European Union. The states say the duties function as a broad import tax and unlawfully revive earlier global tariffs that courts had already rejected. The administration imposed the measures under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, citing failures to keep forced-labor-made goods out of supply chains. The states want the court to halt the tariffs, declare them unlawful and order refunds of duties already paid.
