2 China supertankers carrying 4 million barrels clear Bab Al Mandab
Despite the Houthi blockade, shipping through the Red Sea fell only to 27 from 38 this week, not a full shutdown.
Two supertankers carrying a total of 4 million barrels of Saudi Arabian crude cleared the Red Sea through the Bab Al Mandab Strait on Thursday (23/7), despite the maritime blockade announced by the Houthi. LSEG shipping data showed the Singapore-flagged VLCC Xin Long Yang briefly turned back and stopped in the Red Sea on Tuesday (21/7), then resumed sailing south on Wednesday (22/7) night. The China-flagged VLCC Cosnew Lake followed, and both ships slipped through the strained route. Xin Long Yang is bound for Qinzhou Port in Guangxi, while Cosnew Lake is expected to unload at Huizhou Port, Guangdong. Both vessels loaded oil at Yanbu Port earlier this week. Houthi had previously targeted two Saudi tankers they said were violating the blockade and warned that ships loading or unloading cargo at Saudi ports could be attacked.
