2 men stabbed on Manhattan streets; police probe possible hate crime

Two men were stabbed in separate daytime attacks on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on July 23, and New York police are investigating whether the assaults were a hate crime. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspect, 51-year-old Raul Morales, shouted “Allahu akbar” during both attacks before officers took him into custody near West 88th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Police said the victims were a 57-year-old Asian man stabbed near West 84th Street and Central Park West and a 50-year-old Jewish man attacked near West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Both were hospitalized in stable condition and are expected to survive. Tisch said investigators had found no known connection between Morales and either victim, while Mayor Zohran Mamdani said mental health may have been a factor.
