2 killed as Army Apache crashes near Fort Hood in Texas

What's new: The crash south of Salado ignited a fast-moving grass fire that shut roads and forced some evacuations.

Two people were killed when a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field south of Salado, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. The aircraft was based at Fort Hood, the Army said. Bell County sheriff's deputies responded after a 911 call around 1:33 p.m. local time and found the wreckage and a large fire that officials said was spreading quickly. No buildings were damaged, but emergency crews closed nearby roads and some residents were evacuated as firefighters battled the grass fire. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The Army said the site was being secured while the investigation continued.
