16 hikers evacuated from Gunung Bawakaraeng on RI Day
The number of hikers needing help rose from 8 to 16, with some referred to Puskesmas Tinggimoncong.
A joint SAR team evacuated 16 hikers from Gunung Bawakaraeng, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, during the 81st anniversary celebrations of RI on Monday, 17 August 2026. Head of Basarnas Makassar Muhammad Arif Anwar said the hikers suffered from hypothermia, leg injuries, cramps, asthma, severe fatigue and typhoid symptoms. Eight hikers were evacuated in the morning, then the number of health-related reports increased by evening. Some of the victims were treated at an emergency post, while others were referred to Puskesmas Tinggimoncong. Data from Pos Siaga Merah Putih showed 3,786 hikers registered through the Bulu Balea, Tassoso, Kanreapia and Lembanna routes. The 15-18 August standby operation involved 295 personnel stationed at eight points, including the summit and Lembah Ramma.
