What's new: The suspect also died, and a civilian was hurt as investigators examine whether the gunman was tied to an earlier hit-and-run.
A Lakewood police officer was killed and three others were wounded Thursday evening after a suspect opened fire as officers approached him near an RTD bus in Lakewood, Colorado, authorities said. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene, and a civilian was also injured and taken to a hospital. Police said officers were called around 6:30 p.m. to the area of Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard on a report of a suspicious person who may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier in the day. When officers encountered the man as he tried to board a Route 76 bus, gunfire broke out within seconds. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation with support from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
