Zambia charges opposition leader Brian Mundubile with treason

What's next: Mundubile and 17 others are set to fight the case in court after a deadly post-election raid in Lusaka.

Zambian authorities have charged opposition leader Brian Mundubile with treason after days of escalating tension following the country’s presidential election. His lawyer, Milner Katolo, said Saturday that Mundubile and 17 others, including running mate Makebi Zulu, would answer the accusations in court. Mundubile was arrested after going into hiding following a security raid on a Lusaka property linked to him that killed a former cabinet minister and led to more arrests. Mundubile had rejected the Aug. 13 election result, in which official returns gave President Hakainde Hichilema 60% of the vote and Mundubile 38%. Hichilema is due to be sworn in for a second term on Sept. 1.
