Yusril meets Islamic groups after Abdul Karim deported to Cyprus

Indonesia is preparing a diplomatic note to Cyprus seeking assurances Abdul Karim will not be deported again to Israel or another third country.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra is scheduled to meet several Islamic organizations at the Indonesian Ulema Council office on Wednesday evening to explain the deportation of Abdul Karim Raeq Miqdad to Cyprus. The meeting is being held after the MUI asked the government for an official explanation of the return of the Palestinian national who is wanted by Interpol. Yusril said Indonesia will also send a diplomatic note to the Government of Cyprus to request assurance that Abdul Karim will not be deported again to Israel or any other third country. He said Cyprus police had given informal explanations to Polri that such a scenario was not true. Abdul Karim was arrested in Tangerang on July 16 after Interpol Cyprus issued a red notice, then deported on July 17 and will stand trial in Cyprus court on suspicion of terrorism.
