Yogyakarta scraps 50 motorized pedicabs, replaces them with e-bikes in Malioboro

260 electric pedicabs are already in service, and the city government aims to raise that total to 900 by 2028.

The Yogyakarta city government accelerated the removal of motorized pedicabs in the Malioboro area by scrapping 50 bentor and handing 50 electric pedicabs to their drivers on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. The program is part of efforts to make the Sumbu Filosofi area a low-emission zone. At present, 260 electric pedicabs are operating in Yogyakarta. Mayor Hasto Wardoyo is targeting an increase to 900 units so all bentor can be replaced. To meet the target, the city government plans to seek funding through APBD Perubahan 2026 and APBD Murni 2027, including for the purchase of 500 units. PT KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta is also helping finance 50 electric pedicabs through a TJSL program worth nearly Rp1 billion.
