Wyndham Clark holds off Sam Burns to win 2nd U.S. Open
What's new: Clark became the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open winner since 2014 after surviving a hostile Shinnecock Hills crowd.
Wyndham Clark steadied himself after a nervy final round to beat Sam Burns by one shot and win his second U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York. Clark began Sunday with a six-shot lead, but Burns' 67 and early mistakes from Clark cut the margin to one within five holes. The turning point came at the par-5 16th, where Clark recovered from a drive into thick fescue, reached the green with his third shot and made a long birdie putt to restore a two-shot cushion. He closed with a 3-over 73 to finish at 4-under 276. Clark, 32, led after every round, becoming the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open champion since Martin Kaymer in 2014.
