Wall Street prices in Democratic House gains before midterms

Why it matters: Analysts warn divided government could raise debt-ceiling risks while making major new spending plans harder to pass.

Investors are increasingly positioning for Democrats to win the House in next week’s midterm elections, while a Senate flip remains far less certain. Analysts cited by CNBC say a split Congress under President Donald Trump would probably produce legislative gridlock for the final two years of his term. That could block large policy shifts but complicate must-pass fights over government funding and the debt ceiling. Wolfe Research said 96% of 138 investors it surveyed expected Democrats to take the House, while 58% saw a path to a Democratic Senate. Piper Sandler estimated Democratic proposals could add $5 trillion to deficits over a decade, based on assumptions including tariff repeals and restoring social program funding.
