Wahi cleared to enter Canada for Ivory Coast’s World Cup game
What’s new: The Nice forward was arrested in May in a French spot-fixing probe and later released as the investigation continued.
Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has been cleared to enter Canada for Saturday’s World Cup group match against Germany after an earlier visa delay tied to his legal situation. The Ivorian football federation said the necessary authorization had been obtained, allowing Wahi to travel with the team after he started in the 1-0 opening win over Ecuador in Philadelphia. French football authorities said an unusually high volume of bets had been placed on Wahi receiving a yellow card in Nice’s May match against Metz. The Marseille prosecutor’s office said a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was arrested on May 29 in an investigation into alleged organized fraud, sports corruption, handling criminal proceeds and money laundering, then released after questioning.
