Utah hearing tests murder case in 2025 Charlie Kirk campus shooting

What's next: A judge will decide after the weeklong hearing whether Tyler Robinson faces trial, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.

A Utah judge is weighing whether the man charged in the 2025 killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk should stand trial after prosecutors opened a weeklong preliminary hearing with surveillance video, witness testimony and forensic claims. Tyler Robinson, 23, has been charged with murder and other counts in the Sept. 10 shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem, where Kirk was speaking as part of his American Comeback tour. Prosecutors say Robinson appeared on campus four times that day, including after the shooting. A law enforcement witness also described finding rooftop evidence consistent with a sniper position. Robinson has not entered a plea, and his lawyers have challenged parts of the evidence and asked the court to remove the death penalty.
