USS Abraham Lincoln heads home after 9-month Iran deployment
What's new: The carrier's return follows reports of supply shortages and mental health strains among about 5,000 sailors and Marines.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is heading home after a roughly nine-month deployment tied to U.S. operations against Iran, ending a mission that stretched well past its original May finish. The carrier and its crew of about 5,000 sailors and Marines had faced reports of poor living conditions, including shortages of basic supplies, exhaustion and mental health stress. NPR reported apparent attempts by crew members to jump overboard, though the Navy has not confirmed those accounts. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said a small number of mental health cases were treated with no loss of life. U.S. Central Command said the USS George Washington has arrived in the Middle East and is now operational.
