US voters head to midterms with control of Congress in play
Why it matters: A Democratic win in either chamber could trigger Trump probes and block future court or cabinet picks in the Senate.
Americans are voting in midterm elections that will decide control of Congress and test President Donald Trump’s standing two years into his second term. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot. Polls and nonpartisan analysts have favored Democrats to capture the House, while the Senate remains highly competitive across nearly 10 closely watched races. Republicans have been forced to defend seats in states Trump carried easily in 2024, including Kansas and Iowa, as voters focus on high food and fuel costs tied in part to tariffs and the war with Iran. Trump spent the campaign’s final stretch holding rallies in Republican territory and urging supporters to treat the election as a referendum on his presidency.
